There is big talk about being more mindful in our lives. All spiritual, eclectic, and neo lifestyle channels will tell you this. Be more mindful. Be in the moment. But few talk about the 'how'?

I am a single parent and a big chunk of my understanding of life and its practices comes from my kids. One human, one furry and that's another three blogs worth of content right there, better saved for another day.

As a kid, your sense of acceptance is much more than it would be as an adult.

You look at a squirrel and accept that it will scurry about. You don't look at a line of ants and worry why they came here."

You look at the sky and accept that it is blue. You look at a squirrel and accept that it will scurry about. You don't look at a line of ants and worry why they came here. Instead, you focus on their movements and get fascinated about how they trail each other. Every single one of them.

You smile at flowers blooming, the sun-kissed winter mornings, the fragrance of hot chocolate, etc. In short, you look at world with a sense of wonder. You are in constant appreciation for everything living, breathing, moving in every direction.

As adults, we grow and let our minds become busy.

We get caught up in our controlled selves. 9 am offices, 1 pm lunch and 9 pm bed. We do things to a great extent in as robotic a fashion as possible. Because control! Control brings validation. Control feels comfortable. Control is convenient.

"Control brings validation. Control feels comfortable. Control is convenient."

Until you realise one day, your sense of control is a fallacy. It is a big lie you were conditioned to. Study well and you can control the outcome. Work hard and you control your rewards. When in fact control is the biggest misconception of your life.

The truth of the matter is that the only thing you control is your reaction to your environment. And sometimes even your body and sense of perception might mislead you. So what do you do? When you wake up to the fact that all you knew is not true. You let go and look at life with a sense of wonder. Once more.

"You let go and look at life with a sense of wonder. Once more."

Kindness and gratitude

Look at people. Try to understand the 'why' behind their intentions. Treat them with kindness. Look at your environment. Try to understand the nature or 'why' of an event unfolding. If it unravels you, it is more likely something that bothers you than the environment itself.

Trust the benign, friendly universe that gives you the abundant sun and shine. Food from the ground and nights to rest.

Will it be easy? Nope, absolutely not. Will it mind-numbing as you struggle from the old ways and insecurities? 100%. But keep at it anyway. Chip away at it, without expecting to control the outcome. Be kind to yourself all the time.

"Unlearning is never easy. Especially when you are so well set in your ways. But then when is anything worth striving for, ever easy?"

Be that kid sometimes that made animals out of clouds. And lo-behold, you will be mindful and regain that smile that comes from a space of happy bewilderment.

Happy living!
